I wrote this song, after visiting Bob Dylan's home town of Hibbing, Minnesota, as an answer to his version of Girl from the North Country. "If you were his true love, why did he leave you?"
Hibbing proudly boasts having the world's largest iron ore pit mine, the "Grand Canyon of the North". Some time after writing this song and playing it for a friend he remarked that perhaps the singer's true love wasn't a girl, rather the land, and he left her because she'd been destroyed beyond recognition.

I’d just driven down from Hibbing
humming his songs
an icy chill off the still frozen lake
and stepped into your store
I notice your long curls hanging down

like he asked me too.

Driving these hills of the Iron Range,
must’ve been a booming place
all the iron ore to win the World War
you can see that hole from outer space
